Who will capture EV charging market – Ather, Mahindra or Panasonic?

Right now the most lucrative market which is even bigger than the market of UBER is the YET untouched and almost ignored market of… believe it or not… of EV charging!

See news: Panasonic plans to set up  1-lakh-strong charging grid to power electric vehicles in India

It will be the mother of battle turf after 3G vs 4G! Whoever gets there first using the cheapest investment method will rule.

EV CHARGING/ BATTERY SWAPPING FRANCHISE?

Any company that tries to build the charging infrastructure in India without the support of the population of India will GO BANKRUPT!!!

The traditional approach of… the charging companies is to invest by themselves to set up charging stations around the country. This might be possible in tiny European countries most of which are as small as Goa, Delhi, Sikkim or Kerala but this is not possible in a country as large as India.

Expecting the government to do it will make the govt go bankrupt!

Decentralize the EV Charging Network! Indian Population WILL set up the charging network if they can get a profit from it.

The only way is to get the normal people and businesses to invest and allow them to make a good profit. If a person/business were to invest Rs 10 Lakh and he is able to make a NETT profit of Rs 100,00/mth (and the company installing the system gets Rs 20,000/mth) then it would be excellent business for both of them. This profit of Rs 100,000 is easily achievable if 40 scooters/motorcycles charge @ Rs 100 everyday (40 Scooters x Rs 100 x 30 days) = Rs 120,000. Each charging station could have 4 parking bays that can top up these scooters in 1 hour.

Sun Mobility system can have a battery swapping stations catering specially ONLY to scooters. Swapable batteries are economical as of now for electric scooters because they require only about 1kwh of  energy. This size of Li-Ion battery cost around Rs 60,000. So a 40 battery swapable franchise station  will require around Rs 25,00,000 to Rs 30,00,000 investment and 50 Sqft of shop area!. This is within the reach of many households of India whether some other business invests in it or not.

Sun Mobility should do an advertisement in the newspaper and call for franchise stations just like Amul did with their ice cream franchise.
