How Hero Electric turned a Hero

During the Odd and Even formula tried out by AAP in Delhi not many electric vehicle companies were able to utilize the opportunity to show case their vehicles but Hero Electric company was able to use the wind under its wings and fly high.

Hero Electric was able to visualize the commuter’s problem and the opportunity it presented for the company to familiarize the vehicle with the common people  was seized with both hands. This can be considered one of the best marketing campaigns carried out in the last few decade in India.

What Hero Electric did was this:

Hero Electric  deployed around 100 E-bikes in 15 strategic locations in Delhi and gave free rides to commuters Delhi during the “Odd-Even Drive”. Not only did they invest equipment but they employed “staff/volunteers” to drive the scooters.

This initiative, christened ‘Free and Clean Ride‘ by Hero Electric, was aimed at raising awareness about E-Mobility and mitigating bad air quality in Delhi. The initiative was flagged off by Mr. Satyendra Kumar Jain, Minister of Health and Industry, Delhi and Mr. Sohinder Gill, CEO Hero Electric today from the Delhi Secretariat.

Each location had 5-10 E-bikes with a rider who helped each commuters reach last mile destinations from public places such as metro stations or a busy bus terminal for no charge. The E-bikes were stationed at these locations during the rush hour i.e. 8 AM – 12 PM & 4 PM to 8PM and the riders wore distinctive uniforms, so the commuters could easily identify them. Some of the key locations were metro exit points in Connaught Place, Kendriya Terminal, Jawaharlal Nehru Metro Station, Anand Vihar, Preet Vihar, Rohini etc

The whole idea was to help office goers and general commuters to experience the joy & comfort of zero polluting Electric bikes and also get to learn the advantages of switching over to Electric Mobility.

Since this plan worked and as there was sufficient demand for its services, one can expect the company to deploy a bigger fleet size next time.According to the company’s official statement, two wheelers are contributing the maximum to air pollution in Delhi & E bikes are a visible alternative to immediately cut the emission, considering the fact that 1 electric bike reduces 1 tonnes of CO2 in 3 years, also quite a lot of money and absolutely no maintenance or service.

An electric bike is like… buy it, charge it, forget it… no headache!

What do we take from Auto Expo 2016 – Delhi

With Delhi pollution control discussion in the background the Auto Expo 2016 at Delhi happened at a very opportune moment as far as Electric Vehicles were concerned. It was the right moment when the people were aware of the effects of pollution and how badly Delhi is affected by it.

Diesel car manufacturing companies complain that their car takes in polluted air and leave out cleaner exhaust doesn’t hold much water as after a few years with age and neglected maintenance diesel vehicles will give out more harmful exhaust than petrol. The fact is Diesel is as thick as Crude Oil and is always going to be a dangerous fuel for the lungs.

Auto Rickshaws have moved on to CNG and Electric Rickshaws in Delhi and the next bunch of vehicles  to be converted would be the school buses, mini-buses and the regular Buses and then finally the Trucks.

The enlightened Delhi saw more than six lakh footfalls at the Expo.

The best part was that this was one of the AutoExpo having the record number of Electric Vehicles on Display in India. It had everything from scooters, sports bike, auto rickshaws, cars, sports cars, mini-vans and bus… it had the complete package.

It could have had more vehicles like electric Trikes, Electric ATVs, Quads/buggies & Electric Tractors. But what makes the Expo all the more exciting is the promise of what could come next year because it was just late 2015 that the Paris Pledge was taken to do away with Petrol and Diesel as fuel and to retain CNG and Electric as the fuel of the future.

Auto Expo 2017 will surely have more electric vehicles like Ather Energy, and Hero Motorcorp. The 110cc Navi bike from its look it is evident that it is purely designed with battery in the mind as the source of fuel.

But the biggest hope is that there will be at least a few startup companies that will out smart existing Vehicle makers like Tata and Mahindra and have better vehicles on display… and there is a very good chance of this happening.

Ather Electric Scooter to be Showcased at Surge, Bangalore

Finally after years and months of waiting… Ather is due to display its fabled Electric Scooter at SURGE, Bangalore which is Web Summit’s first technology summit which will be held in India between Feb 23-24, 2016.

This is Gogoro Electric Scooter… just for reference… how technology can handicap a scooter to lonely single person device 😉

Bangalore, Jan 28th, 2016: India’s first smart electric scooter will debut at SURGE on 23rd February. The scooter is the maiden venture of Ather Energy, a Bangalore based technology start-up by IIT graduates Tarun Mehta & Swapnil Jain.

“Ather Energy is very thrilled to be part of SURGE as it is one of the most influential technology summits in the world…. As the launch will bring to fruition the exciting journey that we started two years ago” says Tarun Mehta, CEO and co-founder of Ather Energy on their website.

SURGE is Web Summit’s first conference in India. Web Summit is one of the biggest and most popular technology summits globally that is known to be a great platform for start-ups and investors. Over the last few years, Web Summit has seen the participation of technology players ranging from Fortune 500 companies like Apple and Google to the most exciting startups including Airbnb and Uber.

Tarun is also a speaker at SURGE and will speak on the inevitability of electric being the future of automobiles and their “uncompromising electric scooter” – with a powerful Li-ion battery pack and sub-one hour charging.

In an ecosystem dominated by software players, Ather Energy is among the few hardware startups in India. Their first product, the S340 is completely designed in-house and will commence commercial production in Bengaluru later this year.

France to pave 1000km of roads with solar panels

Wattways solar road tile

Over the next five years, France will install some 621 miles (1,000km) of solar roadway using Colas’ Wattway solar pavement.

Solar freakin’ roadways! No, this is not the crowdfunded solar road project that blew up the internet a few years ago, but is a collaboration between Colas, a transport infrastructure company, and INES (France’s National Institute for Solar Energy), and sanctioned by France’s Agency of Environment and Energy Management, which promises to bring solar power to hundreds of miles of roads in the country over the next five years.

One major difference between this solar freakin’ roadway and that other solar freakin’ roadway is that the new Wattway system doesn’t replace the road itself or require removal of road surfaces, but instead is designed to be glued onto the top of existing pavement. The Wattway system is also built in layers of materials “that ensure resistance and tire grip,” and is just 7 mm thick, which is radically different from that other design that uses thick glass panels (and which is also claimed to include LED lights and ‘smart’ technology, which increases the complexity and cost of the moose-friendly solar tiles).

According to Colas, the material is strong enough to stand up to regular traffic, even heavy trucks, and 20 m² of Wattway panels is said to provide enough electricity to power a single average home in France, with a 1-kilometer stretch of Wattway road able to “provide the electricity to power public lighting in a city of 5,000 inhabitants.”

According to Global Construction Review, tenders for France’s “Positive Energy” initiative have already been issued, and tests on the solar roadway panels will begin this spring, although the exact locations (and costs) for the project have not been specified. No word yet on whether these roads will be moose-friendly.

More information about the solar roadway project can be found at the Wattway websit

Quadrofoil – The Electric Boat

Quadrofoil is a hydrofoiling personal watercraft (PWC), but unlike other PWCs the Quadrofoil produces marginal noise pollution, zero emissions, and creates only the tiniest of waves. As a result, the company claims the quad-finned watercraft could in theory access more environmentally sensitive areas where noise and wave disturbances are prohibited.

https://i0.wp.com/www.solarnovus.com/uploads/n/TrojanBatteryBoat.JPG

Trojan Battery, a manufacturer of deep-cycle batteries, and its project partner, Team Sustain, were named winners of the Intersolar “Solar Projects in India” award.  The companies were recognized for the SunRider solar boat project featuring Trojan’s advanced lead acid Smart Carbon batteries.

Trojan and Team Sustain were selected based on the exceptional pioneering design of the boat in the award’s category of Solar Building, Industrial and Commercial Use projects based in India.

Team Sustain’s SunRider solar boat using Trojan batteries was designed as an eco-friendly transportation solution for water tourism, recreational activities and use in nature reserves.  The SunRider solar boat has zero-emissions and does not pollute lakes and rivers. In addition, due to its inherent silent operation, neither people nor animals are disturbed by noisy diesel motors.

The SunRider solar boat is powered by Trojan’s deep-cycle Smart Carbon batteries which are designed to address Partial State of Charge (PSOC), a common issue in solar applications that has not been addressed by battery manufacturers until today.  SunRider is being used at The Mermaid Hotel and Resorts in Cochin, and the project helped it earn a “green tag,” showcasing an ideal example of “responsible tourism”.

The project eliminated the use of diesel fuel, which has reduced the SunRider solar boat’s carbon footprint by 100%, resulting in zero water pollution and environmental harm.

Team Sustain is a clean, green technology solutions provider based in Cochin, India. The company offers cost-effective logistics and infrastructure solutions for sustainable resource utilization to markets around the world.

Solar-powered boat arrives in Baldwinsville

2012-05-24-mjg-Solar1.JPGThe Solar Star boat skippered by Robert “Bull” Meacham of Arizona turns in the Seneca River before docking at Cooper’s Marina in Baldwinsville. The boat was towed 2,300 miles from Arizona on land and put in water at Tonawanda, NY.

When Robert “Bull” Meacham brings his 23-foot boat to shore, he says he often hears the same question: “Where’s the gas cap?”

His answer is always the same: The boat doesn’t have one, because it’s solar-powered. The solar panels on the roof power the batteries, and the batteries power the motor.

“We’ve been driving this since Buffalo, and we haven’t put a dime in it,” he said early Thursday evening after he and two compatriots arrived at Cooper’s Marina along the Seneca River in Baldwinsville.

After towing the boat on a three-day, 2,300-mile trip from…
