Wayside Amenities… coming up soon!

Long drives are always fun. But in India, the percentage of people actually looking forward to long drives, is quite low owing to poor road conditions and lack of facilities available on the highways. Unavailability of wayside amenities often discourages tourists from taking to the roads, especially if they are travelling with family.

IMPROVEMENT OF AMENITIES ON HIGHWAY

To increase the ease during road travels, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) is now focusing more on the improvement of wayside amenities. At every 50 km stretch on national highways there…

would now be stops for refreshments. 50 sites have already been identified and another 100 spots for developing wayside amenities would soon be added to the list.

  • The Highway Villages will be developed based on the public-private partnership model (PPP)
  • NHAI will provide land for the scheme and the bidder will develop the village
  • 150 such sites are identified as of now
  • Indian Oil, HPCL and BPCL is bidding for most of them
  • Rs. 500 crores are expected to be invested in the scheme
  • The NHAI to raise funds with toll-operate-transfer (ToT) model
  • Individuals owning the land alongside highways also can participate
  • The locals can use the Highway Villages to promote local handloom, handicrafts & local cuisines

More than 20 lakh people in the country is expected to get direct and indirect employment under the Highway Amenities Scheme (HAS).

Today, except for a dozen of such formal amenities built by our concessionaires, there are no such facilities. At the most there are restrooms at toll plazas but they hardy make for ideal stopspots during long-drives,” said NHAI chairman Raghav Chandra.
