Lets compare Ather Energy sales in 2023… (why 2023? Because after incorporation Ather completed 10 yrs of sale in the year 2023) … compare this to Ola which in 2026 completed 9 yrs after incorporation.

The sale makes most people think both are similar companies selling similar electric scooters… but their journey is completely different.

The mid-journey dip: Both had a dip mid -journey…In the year 2023 Ather was selling in 4-Digits for 9 mths before steadying its ship… while Ola sold for just 4 mths before steadying its ship.

Ather started slow and scaled up slowly… yet its sales fell… Ola sold briskly… then its sale slowed down before picking up once again.

By March 2026 Ola was averaging a steady 12,000 to 15,000 vehicles sales per mth. (Ather Energy was founded in 2013 & Ola Electric founded in 2017)

Ather Energy reached 10 years in the Year 2023… while Ola reached 9 yrs in the year 2026:

Remember that Ola had a blistering start selling Lakhs of Gen 1 and Gen 2 vehicles. Gen 1 was basically a Dutch vehicle called EterGo which was unfit for pothole filled Indian roads.

The Dutch design of single arm front “fork” scooter had to be upgraded by Ola under immense loss and upgraded to Indian “bad-road-standards” with Gen 2.

Gen 2 came with Chinese battery and VCUs… these Gen 2 vehicles had their own problems and these really spoilt image of Ola… the biggest problem was that the vehicle would suddenly stop or freeze for no logical reason due to the loose connectors of the VCU which was placed in the front apron of the scooter.

To fix this mechanics had to disconnect and reconnect the connectors which are like wifi-connectors… add quite a bit of sponge to prevent shaking… use cable managing tags… and reboot the scooter – a 5-minutes solution.

(Ola could have made a short YouTube video to show how to fix this and a lot of Scooter Mechanics could have made money and saved Ola the bad name… unfortunately they did not… and this even made Kunal Kamra take some nasty swing at Ola).

Then Ola brought out the Gen 3… the Indian made eScooter and Indian made Roadster Motorcycle.. with Indian made Bharat Cells. Gen 3 was the PROPER INDIAN eScooter.

These Gen3 vehicles have a much better quality of finish and performance. This happened around late Feb 2026… and you can see how the sales have picked up in March 2026.

This also proves how Western products are not always a solution for Indian use.

In Oct 2025 to Feb 2026 Ola had to literally stop its production for almost 5 mths to get its service and parts in order and able reach pan India. OLAs huge initial sales had completely out run its service and parts replacement… and its service was severely stretched.

Usually electric vehicles dont need as much service and parts replacement… maybe this made Ola management a little complacent… but due to the improper design of the front fork and VCU connectors of Gen 1 and Gen 2… combined with the lack of awareness of how to handle eScooters …and prevent battery depletion… created huge pile ups of Gen1 and Gen2 scooters under-repairs.

This situation is quite familiar in military… where a fast invading force is able to make huge inroads into enemy territory out-running their own supply-lines. Then they get stuck there as they are unable to get replenishment of arms, ammunitions, rations or even fresh soldiers.

Such a situation happened to Pakistan army on 10 Sept 1965 when the reached upto Tarn Taran district of Punjab with their Patton Battle-Tanks… where they got stuck as they had far outrun their replenishments ( logistics & supply-lines). They had a huge defeat at the hands of Indian Army.

But unlike in WAR… life gives you second chances… and Ola seems to have made good its 2nd chance and has recovered decently to sell in 5 digits mthly … between 10,000 to 16,000 vehicles consistently.

Its only when a company sales below 5 digits mthly does it become unhealthy.

Ok we expect the current month (July 2026) Sales to be a bit lower… between 12,000 to 14,000… due to the heavy rains lashing India … combined with the El Nino effect of very heavy rains sporadically… especially in its top 3 selling states Maharashtra, UP and Karnataka.

Another HUGE thing to consider is Ather unlike Ola … had to make and sell JUST ONE PRODUCT – scooters... no motorcycles… no inverters… or even very expensive battery cells… still Ather struggled… and sold in 4-digits for 9 mths.

It was BaaS Financing which finally saved Ather Energy… Hope Ola can also get BaaS Financing… and Launch GIG-Scooter by 15 Aug 2026.
