Ghosting is the practice of suddenly ending all communication without any explanation, warning, or notice.
Instead of explicitly saying they are no longer interested, the person simply stops responding to texts, phone calls, direct messages, and emails, effectively “fading away” like a ghost.
While the term originated in dating and romantic relationships, it is now widely used across various contexts:
- Dating & Relationships: Cutting off contact after a few dates, several weeks of chatting, or even during a long-term relationship to avoid uncomfortable conversations or direct rejection.
- Workplace & Hiring: Employers failing to respond to job applicants after interviews, or candidates abruptly dropping out of the hiring process or not showing up on their first day (often called “job ghosting”).
- Friendships: Quietly cutting off a friend by ignoring messages and invites rather than addressing an underlying issue or dynamic shift.
Why People Ghost
- Conflict avoidance: Avoiding emotional discomfort, awkward confrontation, or potential anger.
- Convenience: Digital communication makes it easy to disengage without immediate social consequences.
- Overwhelm: Feeling mentally drained or anxious about formulating a response.
